Activities

'Kabuki Story 2001' aims towards the development of a piece of "kabuki dance" nagauta based upon the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. The exercises and examples within this section provide the basis of support from which there is scope for creative development. They were developed in conjunction with three pilot schools.

The fundamental element of a nagauta is the music and narration upon which the dramatic structure is then constructed. Therefore the tasks below lead to the creation of this essential foundation. After this, it is possible to embellish the dramatic outcome by drawing on much of the material held within this site. The culmination of the original pilot project resulted in performances from each of the schools which incorporated make-up, costume, dance and many other facets of the kabuki experience.
